点评:As theatres go, it’s not that attractive in my personal opinion. The exterior was actually far nicer way back in the early 1990s when it was pale blue.
The interior is overly ornate, and although the acoustic is excellent in the stalls, in the upper dress circle it is a bit lacking.
It does suffer a little from the busy-body volunteers, the nauseous obsession with sucking up to the Lieutenant Governor / Mayor / other local dignitaries when in attendance - I’m sure they are just normal people who would like to watch a play after work unrecognised? On show nights, the foyer is normally full of hob-nobbing social climbers who are desperately trying to be SOMEBODY…….
That all said, the Easter festival of plays is well priced and very enjoyable. There are some good things about the place - rather nice one night when they announced that the show was delayed by 10 mins because an audience member was late arriving from Bride - quite different to the West End, no?
None of the above should detract from the enormous amount of work that has gone into the restoration over the years; it is a Manx asset, and we can all thank the volunteers; without their efforts we would have no theatre at all. I just wish that it was a bit more egalitarian, a place to see as opposed to be seen!
