点评:I grew up in Darlington, and spent my early childhood in the North Road area, so have really fond and nostalgic memories of visiting the (then) Darlington Railway Museum. I now live in Durham but, at a loose end on a Friday on maternity leave with my baby daughter, I decided to go and check out the new Hopetown and see what it is like now.
I had such a great time! The new museum is so engaging and interesting, with loads of interactive exhibits. I learned loads that I’d never known about Darlington’s part in the history of railways. It’s been designed with inclusivity and accessibility in mind - I was really impressed with the thought given to closed captions and even PECS resources for people with communication difficulties. I was really happy to find a spotlessly clean baby room, with great changing facilities and very comfy chairs for me to feed my daughter in comfort and privacy.
The cafe was reasonably priced and I really enjoyed my mocha and scone. All the staff I encountered were so friendly and helpful too.
The only criticism I could give is that the shopping bags from the gift shop could be stronger - sadly mine broke on the way to the car park and the bottle of Hopetown cider I’d bought smashed! Heartbreaking, but I’ll just have to come back and sample one in the cafe.
Overall, I think this attraction has been beautifully designed and will be a great day out for people of all ages. I left actually feeling pretty proud of being a Darlo girl and the town’s part in such a world changing part of history.
