点评:Aristotle once said “educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all”…… words which reception staff in the Palace Green Library should reflect on.
We have been planning a visit to Durham to share the gems of this beautiful city with a friend. Top of our list was the cathedral and the castle. As regular visitors to Durham we know tours can get busy in the summer so we pre-booked and duly arrived 15min before our tour time to collect our lanyards from reception.
Staff may be interested to note that “reception” has its roots in “action of being received or greeted” - sadly we got no greeting and rudely received.
On entering the reception area our friend (from overseas) was carrying a small bottle of water - next thing we know there was a chorus of wails and gnashing of teeth from reception staff as they yelled; NO WATER! I thought Pandora had opened the preverbal box!
Confused at the reception our friend stood there trying to understand the issue only for him to receive a further barrage of loud and hostile shouts of; no food or drink in the building!!
As a university lecturer I fully understand the risk to exhibits within a museum and library. But we were simply collecting tickets from a reception area! Was there really any need to speak to anyone in such a manner? Are we really led to believe that staff in the reception area are banned from having water behind the counter in summer? Perhaps they feared that we’d barge past and create havoc by spraying our Evian over priceless manuscripts and rare books?
The reaction of staff was uncalled for and unwarranted. A simple, courteous and friendly explanation would have sufficed.
What was meant to a an exploration of the treasures of Durham was sadly ruined by the behaviour and thoughtlessness of reception staff who are there to receive and welcome guests.
