A beautiful castle and estate. Well worth a visit

点评：I had heard a lot about Raby Castle prior to my visit. It is situated in really beautiful countryside near to the pretty village of Staindrop.
The castle is the pinnacle of the Raby Estate. The estate is huge and covers an area of approximately 45,000 acres.
A visit to certain areas inside the grounds of the castle are free. Raby Castle and grounds has in recent times undergone a multi-million pound improvement programme. This improvement can be seen in the car parking areas, the Vinery restaurant and cafe, the walled garden and formal gardens and development of some of the old stables into the gift shop and exhibit rooms.
If you want to visit the gardens, the deer park or the castle, then there is a fee. This fee varies, dependant on what you want to see.
Visits to the Vinery, the car park, walking areas around the castle, the gift shop and some of the exhibits are free.
Although the car park area is impressive we inadvertently went wrong when trying to walk to the Vinery Restaurant. The signage was poor. There is a road running parallel to the restaurant building but it is only used for service vehicles and is no entry for the public. It is easy to make this mistake.
The Vinery Restaurant/Cafe is an impressive building. We arrived around 12.45pm and it was quite busy. You cannot book a table but the dining room is split into three rooms and so when the main room is full, there are ‘overflow’ options.
The Vinery was decorated for Christmas.
As with many other reviews, we were disappointed with some aspects of the restaurant. The signage was awful and to be honest the queue for food and the express queue all a bit of a nonsense. It was unnecessarily confusing for those wanting to buy hot food and where to stand and the queues were slow. There was a decent choice (some items having sold out) but the accompanying vegetables were cold. This was raised with a member of staff as feedback. Having now read the other reviews, it looks like this is very much an ongoing issue that is failing to be addressed.
The toilet facilities were clean and tidy and obviously very new.
We then went to see the wooden table in the converted stables, that works in conjunction with a projector, telling you all about the Raby Estate. It’s just my opinion but just seeing this was fantastic. It’s so clever and the projected video onto the carved table top brings it all to life and takes you through the seasons and gives you some sense of just how huge the Raby Estate is.It’s hard to describe the table more than I have. If you visit, you must seek it out.
Near to the table is the gift shop. It had some really beautiful items for sale. It wasn’t particularly cheap but the products on sale were of a good quality.
On this occasion we didn’t visit the castle and gardens but I would definitely return to do so. I really enjoyed my visit . It is such a beautiful looking castle, well preserved with so much history. There are clearly some issues that the states team can and should easily remedy but it’s a shame the same gripes are having to be raised time after time.
One last tip. If you drive from the castle main road entrance towards the village of Staindrop, you can view the deer in the parkland adjacent to the main road.
