点评:The entrance to Gainsborough House is up a side street, beyond the centre’s gift shop and café. The entrance fee at £15.00 is expensive and at this price I am unlikely to go again for a considerable time, but the good thing was on a Sunday there were few other visitors, so unlike most art galleries there was time to really appreciate the works and not be molested by those intrusive people more interested in a selfie than anything else.
The Gainsborough paintings were well exhibited, with striking portraits and interesting landscapes. I also liked the portraits loaned from the National Gallery but somehow the lighting in that area was uncomfortable for me. I had already remarked to the custodian that the rooms containing some of the exhibitions were poorly lit.
There was a special exhibition of works by Cedric Morris which I loathed. His landscapes I found even more depressing than his portraits. In comparison I thought the exhibition of fashion photography was a ray of sunshine.
There is an opportunity on the upper floor to have a picture taken sitting within a picture frame with a classical background. This is fun. From this floor there is also a great view of Sudbury and Gainsborough’s house. The house is well worth a visit especially on a bleak cold day.
