点评:We visited on a Friday morning, parking in the large Car Haven Car Park and walking 450m to the Cathedral via St. Peters Road. On entering the Close, one is greeted by the enormous West Front, completed in 1238 in Early English Gothic style, dominated by three huge arches, and much wider than the rest of the mostly Norman design Cathedral that hides behind it. The West door leads directly into the Nave with its three vertical levels and amazing painted wooden ceiling, which dates from the first half of the 13th century and is the only one of its type surviving in Britain. Turning about, one is introduced to two portraits of one of the Cathedral’s most famous people, Robert Scarlett (“Old Scarlett”), the Sexton for many of his 98 years, and who buried two Queens in the Cathedral before he was buried there himself in 1594. Peterborough Cathedral has little stained glass and few monumental sculptures, so thorough a job did Oliver Cromwell’s soldiers do when ordered to ransack the building in 1643. Indeed, it is remarkable that the Cathedral survived because much of its lead was looted, and masonry carted off. Fortunately the stunning early 16th Century fan vaulting in the New Building survived, and Cathedral repairs and restoration began during the Restoration of the Monarchy in the 1660s and continued extensively in the 19th Century. One can take a one-hour “Highlights” tour of the Cathedral for £6, and our capable guide Sue introduced us to the pomegranate-adorned grave of Katharine of Aragon (the first wife of Henry VIII), the memorial to Mary Queen of Scots (interred at Peterborough until 1612 before being moved to Westminster Abbey), and the Hedda Stone, which is the best preserved and largest Anglo-Saxon sculpture in the country (and a source of much speculation as to what it represents). If taking the tour, add another hour to explore the rest of the Cathedral.
