Hacienda Baru Turtle Release Tour

点评：My husband and I went to the Hacienda Baru Wildlife Refuge to go on a walking tour. Our guide Erick (very knowledgable), mentioned a new turtle release tour that they were offering. We signed up to join for the next morning.
We were met by our guides Chris and Jairo and went on a 15-20 minute walk through the refuge to get to the area where they have the turtle eggs incubating. On the walk we learned about the Olive Ridely turtles that we would be releasing and why there is a need for this program. The turtles that had hatched overnight were ready to be released.
We got to carefully remove the baby turtles from their enclosure, count them, and place them in sandy bins for transport to the beach. Today's count was 268. It is a short walk to the beach.
The turtles are gently placed on the sand and immediately make a break for the ocean. Some are fast, and some are slow. They are adorable and you can't help but love them. We watched and waited until the very last one made it into the water. It is a very 'feel good' experience.
The reason that this project and others like it need to exist is that unfortunately, people come to take the eggs for eating and selling. Hacienda Baru moniters the beach and protects the nests and eggs. You can tell that they care about the turtles as well as all of the animals on and off the reserve.
On the walk back from the beach, we saw a baby Two Toed Sloth, a Howler monkey, and several White Faced Capuchin monkeys. We saw many animals during our time there.
Hacienda Baru is a beautiful spot, and everyone was welcoming and friendly. We had an excellent visit and would highly recommend it.
