点评:Me, my partner and my excited four year old jumped off our ferry crossing from Mastihari to spend a day on the beautiful island of Kalimnos.
We were largely unprepared for things to do, the ferry crossing was entertaining for our child to begin with.
The streets around the front harbour of Kalimnos town are bustling with mopeds, bikes and businesses – people going about their daily tasks and tourists like us trying to thread into the normal culture. We decided to venture beyond the front and through a network of charming narrow streets deeper into residential areas and no more tourists! After a visit to the Sponge Museum we walked a little further down a straight road and found Michael’s museum..!
Michael is a wonderful host who speaks excellent English. You’d probably be surprised to know he never visited the UK yet his linguistic skills speak quite contrary!
The museum comprises of the ground/lower floor of his family home: multiple rooms set out with old furniture and dressings from living quarters to kitchen, reading room to bedroom (relocated from original room on private upper floor).
There are literally hundreds (if not small thousands) of aged yet carefully maintained pieces of art, portraits, documentation, books and a wealth of other historic pieces such as furniture, kitchenware, religious artefacts and room dressings. We walked in and it felt like going back in time very quickly!
Michael walked us around his exhibitions, room by room telling us of the items’ heritage and stories about his many generations family. He was extensively passionate and proud to explain many interesting connections between different members of his family, Kalimnos life in general and the items on display. I’d highly recommend anyone who is interested in learning about history of the places they visit on holiday to go to Michael’s excellent museum.
Thank you Michael and best of luck for future exhibition ideas and many more guests to come.
