点评:I spent two days and one night at the Elephant Conservation Center in March 2026 during my solo trip in Laos.
- Why I decided to go there: Laos is known as the “Land of a Million Elephants,” and I wanted to learn more about these incredible animals without supporting unsustainable tourism. I appreciated that the ECC does not allow visitors to touch the elephants, showing a clear commitment to their welfare from the start.
- My experience with ECC: The booking process was quite simple and efficient, the pick up from Luang Prabang as well (roads in that part of the country are challenging and, even if the van was new and the driver stopped to have some rest mid-way, be prepared with perhaps water and some snacks), and the welcoming at the ECC was spotless and charming: Jumping off the van, you and your groupmates are carried on a boat across the lake of the protected areas and the scenary is spectacular. Service-wise, our guide was extremely prepared and informed us about the history of the center, elephant care in Laos, and ongoing projects; moreover, we spoke with a biologist working there, a vet, and the mahouts to get a very comprehensive overview of the ECC work.
- My experience with the Elephants: As mentioned, no one was allowed to touch, bathe, or ride them. Only mahout and vet could, and we were asked to keep a certain distance from them to create a safe space. With this in mind, I was mesmerized by the opportunity of seeing them out in a safe environment and interacting with each other. I hope the pictures can explain more, but this visit was one of the best I had in the country, and I recommend 100%!
khobchai ECC!
