点评:This is one of my all-time favorite welcome centers. The grounds are beautifully and thoughtfully landscaped and include an important pollinator garden and walking trail leading to an overlook with a mountain view. Inside, there are sections of very helpful information and brochures along with fabulous displays of local art and craft, cultural, and wildlife displays. I’m a wildlife biologist conducting road ecology research along this stretch of I-26 and stop by often. I've gotten to know the staff well and they are genuinely friendly and helpful and have become enormously important partners in the Safe Passage wildlife connectivity project, whose mission is to improve wildlife’s ability to safely cross I-26 that will result in improved public safety. The Welcome Center manager has graciously provided a large space for a Safe Passage display. Last Friday, the anchor piece arrived: an 8-foot, 700-pound locally sculptured black bear made of eastern white pine. Soon he will be accompanied by a continuously running video, poster, and other educational items. Come on by and rest, learn about North Carolina, and hug that big bodacious bear! Thank you, Welcome Center staff for all you do! —Steve G., National Parks Conservation Association
