点评:J.D. Rockefeller founded the Standard Oil Company in the 1880s and it became an oil monopoly. As a result of new antitrust laws, it was broken up into several companies in 1911, including the Standard Oil Company of Ohio (Sohio). Growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, Sohio stations were seen just about everywhere in Ohio with their familiar signage and red, white, and blue color schemes.
BP (British Petroleum) took over the company in the late 1970s. In 1991, all of the old Sohio stations were "rebranded" as BP buildings using the green and yellow colors and a slightly different architecture. The old Sohio stations virtually disappeared.
This location was originally a Sohio station, briefly rebranded as BP, and then acquired by a guy who had worked here in the 1970s when it was still Sohio. He has re-rebranded it back into a Sohio station, complete with sets of the old historic pumps. There is a lot more information on the Sunset and Wilshire website if you are interested.
This station does not sell gas anymore, but is the site of a car repair business. This is private property, not a museum, but the owner is extremely friendly and, assuming he is not too busy, will tell you about it and show you around. Note the old credit card machine in the store with its mechanical sliders.
This reminded me a lot of the kinds of things you can see along Route 66, a few hundred miles to the west.
This is a fun stop-by if you are near Steubenville or looking for something nostalgic. I've given it a "4" because it is likely of limited interest and not strictly a tourist site, but for those liking Americana or off-beat attractions, it is a 5.
翻译:J.D.
