点评:After touring this cave and Font de Gaume, our favorite is Font de Gaume (FdG). However, in some ways, this cave tour was better than the one at FdG.
The pros: This cave is less visited. Tickets are easier to get (but still challenging in high tourist times.) Visits in the cave last longer because there is little paint left on the walls to be damaged by humans. What is left are the etchings in stone that were done around the figures the prehistoric artists created. Each animal was outlined by a slight groove in the stone, surely a laborious endeavor, so even after 15-20,000 years and the loss of the paint, these masterpieces are still admired. Our guide was exceptional and he explained what he showed us in great detail. He didn't rush us, made sure every visitor was able to see the etchings, and gave interesting descriptions of the art.
The cons: Etchings don't captivate quite like the paintings in Font de Gaume do. There is no cave gift shop that sells books, magnets, etc of the designs in the Grotte.
Bottom line: If you're lucky, you can get tickets for both caves. They offer different perspectives of prehistoric cave art and both are worthy of a visit.
