Isle of Wight County Museum的点评
点评：I am a big fan of small museums. I have stopped everywhere from the Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota to the Hemmingway House in Key West. The Isle of Wight County Museum is, without exaggeration, one of the best I’ve seen. The fact that it is housed in a historic building in a small town would alone be enough to warrant a visit, and the lot next door that provides ample parking sometimes—if you’re lucky as we were—hosts a local famers and artisans market. But, there is much more to this neoclassical bank building than meets the eye.
Once inside, any expectations of “small” meaning “cheap” or “chintzy” immediately evaporate. The displays are professional, informative, and well designed and organized. I was impressed by how well their surprising collection of artifacts was displayed, and how well those displays were arranged within a space that wasn’t designed to accommodate them. The use of the vault was particularly clever. The staff here is obviously quite creative and fun in their preservation and presentation of Smithfield’s history.
A small thing that isn’t so to me: this is one museum whose gift shop perfectly fits its personality and displays. I found exactly what I was looking for based on what I saw in the museum, plus some unexpectedly delightful things. It wasn’t, as it too often is in small museums, simply putting their name on a collection of stuff you could get anywhere.
I’m already looking forward to my next visit.
