点评:Lower Slaughter, along with its twin village, Upper Slaughter, is a charmingly picturesque part of the Cotswolds.
It’s only a tiny village and is much quieter than the larger Cotswolds towns but it is picture-perfect. The small, stream-like River Eye runs through the village and is lined on either side with honey-coloured stone cottages. Small stone footbridges criss-cross the river and there are pocket-sized gardens full of Spring flowers. It looks as if nothing has changed for centuries. We could have been walking through a Jane Austen novel.
The main sights here are the 13th century parish church, the old mill with a still-running water water wheel, the Slaughter Manor House and the Slaughter Country Inn.
The Inn is a lovely spot to stop for a drink. Tables and chairs are set outside on an expansive green lawn that stretches down to the running water. On a warm summer’s day, it’s idyllic.
The village has a small museum too but it was temporarily closed when we were there for building work.
It's an easy 25 minute walk From Lower to Upper Slaughter but if you only have time to visit one, then Lower Slaughter is the pick of the two.
NOTE: We walked to Lower Slaughter from Stow-on-the-Wold which was a lovely walk. However if you are driving, be aware that there’s no village car park. You can park for free on the roadside opposite the Slaughters Manor House but when we were there in summer it was already full.
