点评:On our first voyage to Isle Royale, we chose the Voyageur II out of Grand Portage for convenience of location after we returned (4 hours, versus 8 hours from Houghton to to our next vacation stop). Even though it's a longer trip to get to Rock Harbor, it turned out to be worth it. First, an important note: I was stressing a LOT about weather leading up to our trip. It was late June and thunderstorms were rolling across northern Minnesota. I could not find anything definitive online about times when the ferries flat out don't run to ISRO. Fog? Lightning? No definite info, other than they will always do what's best for passenger safety. I get it, really, I do. But I was panicking that we'd be put off a day, or worse, if there was one little storm in the area. So two things I think really help with the Voyageur II versus the other ferries - and this is just my guess: 1) Since it only goes one way each day, with on "recovery" day each week, completely canceling a day would really mess with a lot of people's schedules, and 2) As pointed out by the deck hand, the front of the wheelhouse had 3 important words stenciled on it - "US Postal Service". I believe both of those things to mean "this boat is getting you there, one way or another"! The good news is that the storms ended in the early morning hours of our departure and there were no real concerns with our travel day. We arrived at the dock 30 minutes early, as our confirmation requested. There isn't a big sign to steer you in the right direction, so keep a look out for a small one. The parking area is large and we headed for a building where most of the cars were - we could see the boat at the dock. There is a nice, very new building that has restrooms, but it's not a check in, like I assumed - you just check in dockside. We went down and the captain told us to wait a bit and he'd let everyone know what was going on. He did check us off the list and confirm our destination. Eventually, he announced the process - all large bags go up on top of the boat (we hand them to the deck hand up there), then they are covered with a high end fitted tarp for the duration of the trip. Any important items need to be kept with you, and you can keep small items/bags. We kept one backpack with some snacks, a deck of cards and a few odds and ends. After bags were stowed, boarding began and he did this alphabetically, confirming passenger count in each party. There is a fully enclosed area, down a couple of steps and forward, just behind the wheelhouse. There are 6 pairs of bench seats in this area - each pair facing each other, two with tables (each bench holds 2 people). This is also where a carafe of free hot coffee is housed, as are a men's and women's restroom. Aft of there, there are the two engine covers, then additional rows of "captain's" style chairs. This area is covered, but not fully enclosed due to the engines. Finally, aft of that area, is the stern, with a bench around to seat another few people. All the way at the bow, in front of the cabin, there is a small bench to seat 4. We chose to sit inside, as I'm iffy on the water and wanted to be as close to the center of gravity as possible, but it is fully open to move around so you can get air occasionally, as I did. The restrooms are definitely cramped and you have to read the directions on how to add water and remove the water (with a foot pedal and hand pump). No running water, just hand sanitizer. I actually used the men's because the women's didn't have toilet paper when I ultimately had to go. Our Captain was pleasant and did an safe and efficient job of getting us there, doing a great job of keeping the boat as stable as possible through the wind and fog. Our deck hand, Donnie, was very nice - his first season on the boat. He was able to answer some of my son's questions and seemed genuinely excited to be there. It was foggy almost the entire way, so no real site-seeing, but still an eerie, fun trip. On our return trip, a group of guys that had been on the same trip out with us, checked in for return, but saying one of their group decided to stay behind and would need to be picked up at a different location. The captain looked a bit surprised and proceeded to very calmly, though incredulously, work the situation. It is VERY clear on their website when booking, that you have to tell them exactly pick up and drop off locations so they can plan each day accordingly. Between the captain and his boss, whom he radioed, we made the unplanned stop to pick this guy up (though for a likely "upcharge" I heard discussed) - it was quick, to not put us off our arrival time too much. Speaking of - they say the trip is 7 hours one way. This is only true if they stop at every possible stop. We did not, so we were about 30 minutes early one day, and 20 minutes early the other. We did get a beautiful day on that return - so we got to see all the scenery we missed on the way. Finally, the only real irritation of the journey was with the parking at the end. Again, it was clear on the website that parking would be PAID - a set fee per day and that it would be collected upon exit. Okay, fine. We sat behind a couple of cars at the exit while one guy, with a cash bag collected fees. The car ahead of us was there for a bit and eventually waved on by the guy. So, what they don't say is that it's CASH ONLY. Most of our bags were in the trunk, but luckily, my young son had a bunch of $1 bills in his wallet in his backpack. I dug through and found it and counted out a bunch of singles (that my son howled about losing later, despite us paying him back after the trip, just in larger bills). These days, with so many places preferring to be cashless, I just assumed it would say if cash was required. This should absolutely be updated on their website! Overall, a great journey that really added to the adventure of Isle Royale. I wouldn't hesitate to use this ferry again!
