点评:Townend historic house is one of the jewels of the Lake District, and may be my favourite National Trust property anywhere. My husband and I visited it again today and loved it more than ever.
It’s a 17th century small manor house/large farmhouse in a village setting surrounded by sheep fields and fells. A visit takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
Outside, there’s a gorgeous little cottage-style garden - lit up today with tulips and primroses - and the house-front is a marvellous jumble of lattice windows and round Lakeland chimneys.
Inside, the 8 or 9 small rooms are low-beamed and homely, the wooden panelling is exquisitely carved, and every quirky corner is crammed with fascinating household objects, books, pots, clocks, and paintings of sheep. All the items belonged to the Browne family, who lived in the house for centuries - and whose story is brought alive by the very welcoming and knowledgeable staff and volunteers.
All in all it’s a totally delightful and very touching glimpse of Lake District family life in the past.
We made a half-day outing of it by walking through Troutbeck village, looking at the Pre-Raphaelite windows in the church, and having lunch at The Queen’s Head.
