Lovely bookstore, skip the coffee shop.
Beacon Hill Books & Cafe的点评
点评:2 ⭐️ Lovely bookstore + coffee shop concept in Beacon Hill. 🤎
Let me start this review by saying that I believe that during the dry autumn/winter months, a visit to this place must be so much better and less chaotic than the rainy day we got.
We got there at 10:40 for some cake and coffee on our way to Quincy market and we were met by a 5 minute standing line to get to the front where we were told we had to wait for the shift of “service” from breakfast to lunch at 11am. There is nowhere to stand or sit to wait for a table so we just stayed in the rain until we were called at 11:05am.
A big (HUGE) mistake was not checking the menu beforehand because we knew how much we wanted to make this stop on our journey through boston.
The starters are about $15 each and main dishes are all over $25.
The desserts are also priced at $15 +.
We got their spiced cake at $18 à slice and it was underwhelming both in flavour and in slice size.
We also got two cappuccinos at around $7 each (they are really small cups) and those were really good.
Although the service was nice, there were a lot of things happening around us that left us feeling slightly awkward.
The table next to us was being served by someone who didn’t speak English so they had to repeat themselves 5 times (no exaggeration) and after 5 times the server went to get a colleague because she didn’t know how to work the ordering system.
The coffee is very small and quaint but loses its personality when all you hear is shouting in Spanish coming from the kitchen, including swearing.
The poor ladies next to us found 2 hairs in their food after waiting for a piece of quiche for 20 minutes and the table next to them got their order completely wrong, mind you this is a small seating area with about 10 tables (if that) and about 6/7 servers around.
After paying our humble $38 after taxes, included 3% kitchen gratuity and tip we got in the lift to visit the bookstore and that was lovely and organised, staff was really nice and friendly.
Prices are what you’d expect from a small bookish business but things are so cute it’s almost impossible not to want it all.
We ended up not seeing the remaining floors and left through the second floor because it was extremely chaotic which was expected since it was pouring down.
Overall I would definitely come back to browse some goodies and books at the bookstore but the cafe is a hard pass. There are amazing independent coffee shops in the Boston área and if you take something from this review is that sometimes being a bucket list place does not make up for the money, time and stress put into it.
