点评:I was blown away by King's Canyon! We did the Rim Walk, which is 6 km long and takes 3-4 hours, depending on whether you do the little side quests, like Garden of Eden or the Lookout spot. It took us 2.5 hours without the side quests, and we're moderately fit people who take lots of photos. Unless you have mobility issues, the walk will be moderately difficult but not impossible (the greatest challenge is the HEAT, more on that in a bit).
DEFINITELY begin by 8 AM. We were fools and began at 8:30, at 27°C (which is still nice and doable), but I absolutely recommend before 8 AM if you can. It's the LAST leg of the hike that'll get you (in our case, 38°C, which was a STRUGGLE).
The most physically demanding part of the walk is the first 500 steps, which you get out of the way quickly. It's not like 500 stair steps, which are even and consistent, but ROCK steps, which are uneven and require sure footing. There is a viewing platform after the first 200 steps, and another one after the next 200 steps if you need to catch your breath. The last 100 steps are easier, and it's mostly flat after that with the occasional incline scattered throughout.
The walk was just gorgeous all throughout. It takes you through former sand dunes, canyons, dried-out lakes, just so many things you probably don't have at home. The first side quest is a Lookout, which takes about 20 minutes round trip. If you want to skip a part of this walk, this would be the one! While it's beautiful, you'll get to see the same thing from the other side in the last third of your walk.
Speaking of the last third... this was when it started getting hot. They tell you to drink a liter of water per hour you're out. Listen to that. I don't care how fit you are. I trained in a boxing boot camp in THAILAND for 7 hours a day, 6 days a week, and still felt dehydrated despite the recommended water intake. You'll feel all right at first, but it'll really get you if you're not careful. The heat here hits a little different because the air is so arid, and you'll be dehydrated before you even know it. So unless you routinely work out for hours in the middle of a desert, drink the recommended amount. More if you can. And remember your sunscreen & full-brim hat!!
Anyway, we reached the Garden of Eden, which was a nice side quest. This marked the last third, because from here it's about 1.5 hours back to the carpark. Do it if you can, it's a welcome break from dry, red sand.
The last 45 minutes was challenging because of the heat, which was 38°C and ARID. My skin was burning. Like I just wanted to get back to the car and started feeling woozy on those last steps.
All in all, it was such a gorgeous hike and definitely a MUST. There are less challenging walks (I think the easier route is called King's Creek), so definitely check them out if you're in the area.
A few tips:
- If you're hitting the summer months, start at 8 at the latest.
- Slather yourself in sunscreen, bring sunglasses if you're sensitive to light, and bring a full-brim hat. I don't care if it looks ridiculous. Save your face, your skin, and your eyes.
- Bring like 3 liters of water, lol. There's a water refill station at the carpark, so be sure to fill up.
