点评:We spent 2 nts in Big Oak Cabin. We traveled from NM to Iowa and stopped in KS to visit our nephew stationed at Ft Riley. Approx 15 min from base so for us this was much better than a hotel.
Nice trails to enjoy whether hiking or running. We enjoyed running across the dam with water views on one side and fall foliage beginning on the other side. Lots of trails to explore. Horse friendly as well which we don’t see a lot of in state parks.
We travel a great deal and often stay in state park cabins. I would rate these as average. Size was small but we knew that going in to it. Another reviewer posted all cabins have a separate room from the bedroom and TVs. That is NOT accurate. Big Oak cabin is an efficiency cabin. No tv (not an issue for us). 2 twin bunk beds and a futon. There is a fold up table & 2 chairs. If you used the table or pulled the futon out for sleeping it would be very cramped! Positives and not so positives for Big Oak cabin:
POSITIVES
Water views
Covered patio area is HUGE w/ 2 picnic tables
Proximity to trails from cabin
Fairly good cell coverage (Verizon)
NOT SO POSITIVE
One mirror in entire cabin. It’s in the tiny bathroom with no shelf & no outlets. Doing makeup was a bit challenging but doable. Using hair appliances with the mirror not an option. You’re at the lake so this may not be a concern for you. 😉. FYI.
Mirror is inside the bathroom so if someone is using the shower the room is even more cramped. A mirror mounted outside the bathroom and the addition of a shelf in the bathroom would be a great addition.
Mattresses are hard.
Water smelled & tasted terrible in sink and shower. I’m NOT a fussy person in terms of water. I typically drink tap water and don’t waste $ on bottled water. Here I would bring bottled water for sure.
FYI
Arrive before dark if possible. Park is NOT well marked, signage is not lit, signage to various areas of the park sits too far back in off the road, etc. We arrived at 9:30 pm as we were coming from NM and it took us 30 min driving around trying to find our cabin. The cabin itself sits back in the trees and they didn’t leave an exterior light on so we even drove right past the cabin w/o seeing it. Most places leave an exterior light on for guests on check in day.
Have a park map or photo of map if arriving after dark. Know in advance where your cabin is on the map.
Don’t forget to bring your own linens, pillows, soap, shampoo, etc.
Door handle is a lift UP and not push down. Odd to me. We thought we were locked out of the cabin for several tries as we tried to open the handle the “typical” way by pushing down.
Overall a great park with fair cabins. We will be back visiting Ft Riley this spring and will stay here again due to the proximity to base and gives us something to do during the day (hiking, running, biking) while our soldier is working and then a quick trip to base to spend the evening with them.
(Verizon)
