Hidden gem in the Sussex countryside

点评：With so many large and amazing gardens in Sussex open to the public, its easy for a gem like Bates green to slip by unnoticed. That would be a shame as this beautiful, medium sized garden has a lot to offer. Its also of the size where you can see ideas that would work in your own garden.
Its just 1.5 acres in size, but seems much bigger - divided into three distinct areas. The front garden has a cottage garden feel, with flowering shrubs, many bulbs and a pond. The middle garden has a more formal arrangement, with colourful planting. Beyond this is the woodland garden - where we were delighted by a nuthatch going to and from its nest. It is a garden that is really led by the plants, all excellently maintained, despite a challenging growing year.
You can look around in an hour, but with so many pleasant spots to sit and interesting and unusual plants, you can easily spend much longer. In addition to the gardens, you can also visit the adjacent wildflower meadow and woodland.
On the practical side the garden is open on Wednesdays throughout the year, and daily during the bluebell season. It also opens for pre-booked workshops on a range of topics most Thursdays. It was quite a grey and showery day when we visited, but the gardens were full of colour.
