点评：Any walking tour of the city will include Fed Square.
Along with the Yarra River and historic Flinders Street Station, it’s one of the city’s major landmarks. All three are close together so you can easily combine seeing them at the same time.
Designed in 2002 as a modern version of a town square, it is a large, open, plaza-like space, enclosed by uber-modern buildings.
If you are just coming for a look, you don’t need to linger here very long.
We stayed long enough to check out the dramatic architecture that surrounds the square. It’s all angled planes of glass, zinc, and sandstone, put together in a strangely fractured pattern. Not surprisingly, it was controversial in its day.
Once we’d done this, we headed down the stairs towards the Yarra to walk alongside the river towards Melbourne Park, where the tennis was being played.
Mostly the square serves as a good meeting point but lots of events are held here and some significant art and cultural venues are here also - the NGV Potter Gallery of Australian Art, the ACMI (film and screen culture) and the Koorie Heritage Trust.
The square comes alive during the Australian Open which is when we were there. The tennis is broadcast across a large fixed screen and the square is filled with people who have set up blankets and seats to watch the live broadcast. The atmosphere when major sports events are broadcast is amazing.
