点评：When visiting Sri Lanka for one month, you like to experience as much as humanly possible. Whether your budget is modest or low, fun times are on the agenda. Of course there’s sun kissed beaches, hiking, temples, exotic dishes and beautiful panoramic landscapes to behold.
One of the many splendour experiences you can do here is walk with elephants. You get to feed them, wash them and sit on their back and ride them. They’re domesticated of course. It’s not like being in Jungle Book, well almost it’s comparable. An hours drive from Kandy and you’re there.
There are different price packages of course. We chose the one where you could feed and wash them. So £41.40 or $50 for the 90 minute experience. We were assigned a female who was 15 years old. She was wonderful and you instantly fall in love with these adorable mammals. Their ears flap and their eyes follow you.
We walked about 20 minutes with her then proceeded to head to a shallow river. Several other tourists were ahead of us. There’s a continuous flow of traffic there. After our experience, I researched online who was the most ethical as there’s a few companies in the area that are operating. Sadly this one is not mentioned. I like to think they’re being looked after, fed properly and not abused.
You can’t help being cynical for all the bad press you hear about. The price is high and also staff ask you for donations inside the sanctuary. This is not good, especially when they charge you a very high price for the privilege. However it’s not every day you get to be in an elephant’s company. The benefit of the doubt was given here in bucket loads.
