点评:Our visit to this place turned out to be our worst experience in Sri Lanka, largely due to poor research and a bad choice of guide.
We had originally intended to visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, a well-known rescue and conservation center. However, even though we had clearly instructed our guide to take us there, he led us to a different elephant center in Pinnawala—one that clearly operated for profit rather than animal welfare. It is nothing more than a tourist trap. Not only was the entrance fee exorbitantly high—10,000 to 20,000 Sri Lankan rupees—but our so-called guide also insisted that we give a substantial tip to the staff.
We realized the true nature of the place the moment we stepped inside. There were only five elephants, all in a pitiful state. We saw visible injuries on their legs and clear signs of mistreatment.
The elephant they brought over to us started crying after just a few minutes. Seeing an elephant with tears streaming down its face is the most heartbreaking experience imaginable.
Please, learn from our mistake. Verify the names and authenticity of the places you visit, and do not rely solely on your guide.
