点评：While we all rave about the paintings at the Sistine Chapel, we forget the painted wonders in our own backyard. I am referring to the paintings on the ceiling of the Veerabhadra Temple at Lepakshi built by brothers Viranna and Virupana, Governors of King Achutaraya.
Showcasing Girija kalyanam, Arjuna's pennce, Draupati's Swayamvara, the story of Manuneedhi Chozhan's justice, these visual narratives are truly the hidden gem at this Temple.
The borders that surround these paintings are even more fascinating. The striped, checked and floral borders along with draped garments and jewellery portrayed in the paintings are not only testament to the skill and creativity of the artist of the Vijayanagara period but they also offer a valid source of historical documentation of how people would have lived at this period.
Veerabadra temple, Lepakshi is a 16th century temple which is a treasure trove of intricate frescos and carved pillars that narrate historical and mythological stories.
The sanctum houses Lord Veerabadra, Durga Mata, several Shiva Lingas, Ganesha and Vishnu.
A must visit when you are in the region.
