弗吉尼亚美术博物馆的点评
点评：A splendid museum! Its Paul and "Bunny" Mellon collections are tops. The artist-jeweler Jean Schlumberger's works are breathtaking, as are the Fabergé items donated by Lillian Thomas Pratt. Then there are myriad other collections -- Greek, Asian, English, American art, art of all eras -- and top-notch. This museum is full of surprises. An old New York interior once installed at the Museum of the City of New York has found its way here -- thank goodness. The John Singer Sargents, Childe Hassams, and others, were as good as the ones at our "best" museums.
The restaurant is lovely, the gift shop extensive.
One quarrel, and for me it is a big one: The amplified live music on both evenings we visited was intrusive and inescapable, echoing throughout the upstairs galleries. And the odd thing is that the second evening dozens of chairs were set up auditorium-style in front of the musician, and only, at last count, 8-10 people were occupying them. We watched a couple leave; too loud!
Other than that -- really, VMFA is a must-see. I was blown away, and I'm a museum goer who's gotten around.
