点评:My family of 4 stayed here 2 nights. As none of us, myself included, had ever been snowboarding, I thought the newly added Aces program, which is free with a refundable deposit, was a great idea.
I booked through the Wisp website, which was simple enough. I did not receive any reminders of my stay leading up to it, and panicked a little when I tried to check my reservation before making the drive and received an error message. However, when I called, the staff member who answered at the Lodge was able to quickly confirm that my reservation was still confirmed and the room would be ready.
The lodge itself is nice, with what I would expect to be reasonable amenities for skiers and snowboarders trekking through the lobby areas —not super fancy, but nicely decorated, and easily wiped down from snow, mud, etc. There are a few restaurants in close proximity to each other, right within the lodge, ranging from a casual, paper-plate style pizzeria to grab-and-go foods and a nicer sit-down restaurant. All of the staff that I spoke with at the lodge were lovely, including the bartenders/waitstaff that were handling multiple responsibilities in Hearth & Hops, the staff member running the Last Chair, and the staff at the front desk.
We booked a 1 bedroom suite, which was also nice, with a king size bed in the bedroom, and a pullout sofa in the living area, plus a separate bathroom-- no frosted glass walls to put your toilet on display or anything like that! The noise level was acceptable, too, even though it was a busy weekend. I only heard people walking by and chatting occasionally, and there were no issues with loud appliances or temperature control.
The challenges were likely a mix of certain staff, broken links, and my own lack of knowledge simply because I am a complete beginner to all things winter sports related, but I want to list them out because they really shaped our experience.
First, I confirmed with the front desk that rental equipment would be at the lesson area, and that I just needed to show up. I really like to know exactly where to be and how to be prepared, so I was sure to confirm this.
We showed up about 10-15 minutes early for our lesson, and this was not enough time. It was unclear where to start checking in, as there are multiple stations, and I didn't notice any visible signage or direction. There were staff members who were checking on guests and giving direction, and while I didn't get his name, the man who interacted with me and my family was very nice and helpful as he ran back and forth.
We were directed to a check-in desk, and waited in line for several minutes, only to be told we just needed to go scan a receipt from my email at a kiosk. I am not sure what exactly doing that did, but we were told by the staff at that initial desk to go to another station for boots, which was quick and simple, and then we went to the next desk to get boards. We waited for a bit at this section, but again, the staff were friendly. The nice staff member came to check on us a few more times, and as we were now running behind, I mentioned that if we were too late for the lesson, I understood. I was a bit overwhelmed at this point because again, I wasn't entirely sure what I needed, and we were now 15 minutes late for the lesson. It turns out that the check-in desk that had directed us to the kiosk and to the boot desk, was actually supposed to give us helmets, so the staff member ran back to grab those and help my kids put them on, while we waited for our snowboards. This staff member reassured me that if we were too late, we would be moved to a later group lesson, and that it wasn't a big deal.
The staff member at the snowboard counter, assuming that he could tell I was stressed, also reassured me that running behind was a regular occurrence, that people underestimate how much time it takes to move through the rental area, and not to worry about it, and that it was truly not a problem. This was really helpful and appreciated.
Once we were all situated, we walked outside to the training area with the guidance of the previously mentioned friendly staff member, who brightly introduced us to our instructor. Two children were already part of the lesson. The instructor responded by loudly announcing that when people show up twenty-five minutes late for the lesson, it impacts everyone else. Fair enough, but it was embarrassing, especially when I had tried to confirm everything the night before, had been misdirected a few times, waited in various lines, and had been assured that it was not a problem.
Again, I am a complete beginner. I had never touched a snowboard in real life prior to this, and my experience with winter sports is a combination of watching the winter Olympics, and playing SSX Tricky as a child. Needless to say, I was already feeling the stress of trying something completely new.
The instructor had very little patience for this and continued to point out that we were late for the rest of the lesson.
We started by strapping one foot into each board. I looked over to see that my 8-year-old had the wrong foot (we assume... it was the opposite of everyone else's) strapped in, and the instructor said, "Well, I guess that's the foot she uses, today," and walked away to the other kids. I shuffled over to help her, couldn't release the boot strap, and tried to just hold her hands to move a little bit on the board. The instructor was already moving and calling us to go a few feet away to show us how to turn, but unfortunately, I couldn't move myself and my kid. Once the instructor once again commented how he "would hope that we could learn more than just turning in an hour and half lesson," again, pointing out we had been late, while my kid was very obviously on the ground with her board on top of mine and we were stuck, I was done. My kid just wanted to quit, and I felt so incredibly overwhelmed and *bad* that I took her inside, cried, and left.
The instructor did yell after me to tell the staff I was just taking a break, but I definitely wasn't planning to return. The comments also apparently didn't stop, as my husband and older daughter did continue the lesson.
This honestly ruined the trip. The friendly staff member reappeared and tried to ask me a few questions as I was changing back into my shoes, but I was a mess at that point and just wanted to go back to my room. I do want to mention that he really did try to direct me to the ski office, etc., so he was truly kind and helpful, but I just wasn't in the headspace at that point to try. Not having actually learned how to snowboard, use the lifts etc., I wasn't about to go attempt it myself or risk my kids getting hurt, so that really limited our options for the rest of the trip. This is something I have been begging my family to do with me for years, so having finally gotten to go, really having tried to do everything right, only to be dismissed and berated by the instructor to the point of leaving in tears really killed the vibe and my interest in the sport at all.
I will say that there were others in the rental area who I assume had booked private lessons, and their instructors seemed really nice and supportive, explaining all of the gear and encouraging them, so if I could have done it again, I would have opted to go that route.
There are other activities at the resort, like an escape room, and snow tubing, but I did not realize that it had to be booked in advance, and everything was fully sold out. There is a mountain coaster, but the link to the pass that includes it was broken, and when I explained that I was having trouble finding available activities, the staff at the lodge desk showed me some offsite places to visit, so evidently everything was just sold out. So be aware, everything needs to be preplanned, and you can't just pick activities spontaneously.
The pool area is really nice, thankfully, because that's where we spent the rest of our trip.
Overall, if you already know what you're doing, I would say the place is a nice destination, but I wouldn't recommend it for true beginners.
