Sheepdog demo was an absolute winner for the family

点评：We went to the sheepdog demo that runs on Thursday evenings during summer. We arrived as a family of four (two adults, a child, and a baby). Admission was £10 per adult, and £5 for the child, with babies being free of charge.
The demo was fantastic. It started with an opportunity to meet and greet the sheepdogs who were extremely friendly and delighted to make everyone’s acquaintance, and were really sweet with all of the kids present. There were also several puppies who were absolutely adorable!
The demo itself lasted for an hour and a half. Despite the farmer’s insistence that he isn’t a showman, it was brilliant. The patter was excellent and he was honest and humorous about the challenges of farming and working with animals. His love for his dogs, and the sheep he works with, came through. He started by showing us how he trains the dogs (which he breeds himself), by introducing them gradually to the sheep and working with them to build their skills and confidence. He then let some sheep out of the field and showcased a number of dogs and their abilities, all the while explaining the practical purpose of what they do. He then finished with a demonstration of what would be required at a sheepdog show, as he takes his dogs to these shows.
The challenge of this kind of demonstration is clear - as he said during the show, there is an old adage to never work with kids or animals! However, the demo went really well, and was both educational and entertaining.
This was a really unique experience and we all hugely enjoyed it. Whilst perhaps not the cheapest, given you can easily pay more than this for a family trip to the cinema to see a mediocre film, I would definitely recommend this! It was also great to hear about the conservation work being done on the farm given the importance of this in the current environment. Definitely one of the highlights of our holiday, so money very well spent!
