Anyone with a brain and even the smallest interest in history will be aware of England's Jurassic Coast, and whilst it is almost always attributed solely to Dorset, it does in fact also take in neighbouring Devon.
It is called the Jurassic Coast, but in truth it ought to be called the Jurassic/Triassic and Cretaceous Coast, as coastal erosion over the years has revealed a veritable treasure trove of historical information from all three of these very different eras in world history.
Whilst complete in-tact Dinosaurs don't come tumbling out of the cliff faces, like they might in Colorado, Wyoming or Utah, there is still a plethora of fossilised remains to be found along the Jurassic Coast - remains of all the creatures that inhabited the area when it was going through one of its various incarnations as, amongst other things, a desert, a tropical sea, and a boggy marshland.
What is so neat about this is that the fossilised remains are abundant - they can be found by almost anyone. You don't need an archaeologist with a beard and clipboard to find these things - a child could stumble upon a 200,000,000 year old fossil by accident! It is quite literally child's play.
Granted, my visit to the Jurassic Coast bore almost no opportunity for fossilised finding, as I was on Weymouth Beach, where the only fossils to be found are the local SDP voters.
The Jurassic Coast has many wonderful, natural rock formations, such as Durdle Door, Sea Stacks, Pulpit Rock and the Old Harry Rocks. It also boasts the highest point along the entirety of Britain's South Coast - the Golden Cap near Charmouth.
Ultimately, whether you are hunting for fossils, building sandcastles with a toddler, studying geology or merely enjoying the views, the Jurassic Coast has got the lot!
