点评:Lydham Hall is a beautiful historic home in Rockdale in Sydney, dating from the 1860s or 1870s (despite the plaque near the front door that says 1855!) It is owned by the Bayside Council and has been managed as a museum since 1971 by the St George Historical Society. It is currently opened to the public on the first Sunday of every month, except January, between 10.00am and 4.00pm, and for group bookings on other days, as arranged. Entry is $8 for adults, less for pensioners, quite reasonable.
The house is full of artefacts from life in 19th and early 20th century Australia, over 1500 items according to the Society. The best thing is that this is a tactile museum; the items are, mostly, not displayed in glass cases, but accessible to pick up, turn over, and examine (gently). The piano is even able to be played, although it needed a tuning last time I was there. The guides, all volunteers, are knowledgeable, and happily talk of the research they do to improve and update that knowledge.
They have excellent catering on site too - their Devonshire teas attract return business on their own, and the pumpkin soup in winter is highly popular. There are booklets and books of local historical interest for sale at bargain prices, too. I picked up several. If the weather is fine, the garden is beautiful, too - sit outside and soak it in. There are views all the way to Botany Bay.
The house is a Victorian sandstone building with marble fireplaces. I love it and have been back several times. In fact, if you join the Historical Society, re-entry to the museum becomes free. They also have entertainment and special exhibitions from time to time - a local band played the last time I was there, and I understand they have an opera singer booked for February! Highly recommended.
