点评:The first notice of a building on this site is from 1289. The current house dates from 1758. The Mann family bought the house in 1842, and sold it in 1891.
During the air raid on Lübeck in 1942, the house fell victim to the inferno that destroyed two-fifths of the historic old town. Only the facade with its blind window openings remained of it.
The house owes its significance to its entry into world literature as the setting for the novel "Buddenbrooks" by Nobel Prize laureate Thomas Mann. The story of the Buddenbrook family spans four generations and resembles the Mann family history in many details, and it unfolded largely behind the late Baroque facade that still stands today.
Buddenbrook House (Heinrich and Thomas Mann Center) in Lübeck has been a memorial site under the auspices of the Lübeck Cultural Foundation since 1993.
At the end of 2019 the Buddenbrook House was closed for expansion and renovation. It will reopen to the public in 2029 or 2030. Parts of the exhibition can be seen in the Behnhaus-Drägerhaus Museum, and books by Thomas, Heinrich and Klaus Mann can be bought - in several languages - at "Buddenbrooks am Markt - Infocenter und Museumsshop", where they can also stamp your book(s) with the Buddenbrookhaus stamp.
