A castle like no other
Chillingham Castle的点评
点评：I've been to many castles - as a History graduate and enthusiast of the Medieval period, I try to visit one each year on my birthday - but I can tell you that Chillingham is a castle like no other in the world.
I am not talking architecturally, as while it is a handsome enough building, it is not particularly large or imposing, or to the best of my knowledge, unique in its structure, but its unique nature is largely down to the efforts of one man, Sir Humphry Wakefield - who celebrates his 89th birthday on the day I write this - and his restoration of the site.
We were told that Chillingham was in a dilapidated state when he bought it for one pound in the early 1980s but now this treasure trove of eclectic artefacts has his fingerprints all over them, with his personality and unique sense of humour shining through courtesy of the many captions he has provided himself.
This is not the kind of sanitised castle experience you might get at a National Trust or English Heritage property, and if an Englishman's home is his castle, Chillingham is very much Sir Humphry's realm and much the better for it.
Saying that, our booking at the country's 'most haunted' castle was diligently handled by the always helpful and friendly Melanie in the estate office for what was a birthday gift for my wife, who is a paranormal enthusiast.
We stayed overnight in the Guard Room apartment and our booking also enabled us to access one of the castle's wings and courtyard outside of normal opening hours.
At 7:30pm we also embarked on a 2-hour 'ghost tour' around the castle and its grounds with guide Andy, who was very knowledgeable and approachable with what was a small group of 3 couples.
We were told that Sir Humphry was at home while we explored his home so my only regret was not meeting the great man himself!

晚上7:30，我们还在导游安迪的带领下，开始了为期2小时的“鬼魂之旅”，参观了城堡及其庭院。安迪知识渊博，对只有三对夫妇的小团也很友好。
我们被告知，在我们参观汉弗莱爵士的故居时，他正在家中，所以我唯一的遗憾就是没能见到这位伟人本人！
