点评：While I had a day to spare between my biking tour of Croatia and my plane from Venice to Bilbao, I thought I would spend the day in Muggia rather than Trieste. Sleepier town, better prices.
I walked up a long hill for a view of the Bay of Trieste. Up there the ancient basilica still stands in all its beauty. There are records of it since the 13th century, but based on a few items found during excavations, its construction probably dates back to the 8-9th century. Consolidated and restored in the course of time, it is built with local sandstone. It is divided into a nave and two aisles by arches leaning on pillars and the final part of the aisles and of the presbytery are separated by stone panels decorated with patterns. Remarkable is also the semicircular stone Ambon (pulpit), supported by thin columns and with a lectern decorated with sculptures. The inside is painted with a double cycle of Byzantinesque frescoes of the 14th and 15th centuries. They, were restored in 2019.
The church is the only remaining building to belong to the fortified site of Muggia Vecchia.
The Basilica sits above the old fishing port of Muggia, at the top of Monte Castellier 557 feet (170m), surrounded by a small archaeological park with ruins of the original Roman castrum dating to the 1st century BC. From here there is a fantastic panoramic view across the Bay of Trieste and all the way to the Slovenian border. The entire area on the top of the hill is in fact characterized by a number of remains spread among centuries-old oaks and Downy oaks.
Great space for a picnic, relaxation and views - and it only costs a small hike uphill to get here.
