点评:Lovely staff and fascinating information all around about life aboard ship in the days of Sir. Francis Drake and great engagement with children with the stamp card tour so really good from that point of view. Also really brilliant to see the gunfight on board as the centrepiece of the pirate festival. However the material condition of the ship is somewhat alarming. The stern gallery is rotten (how someone hasn’t gone through it I don’t know!), the decks are rotten so that water streams in during the rain and there are multiple weeds, mosses and grasses sprouting up all over the place, the sides are rotten and great chunks of damp rotten wood come off in your hand when descending staircases running your hand along what should be a thick strong piece of oak. Even the golden hind figure head has fallen off. I know this replica was built in the 1960’s on a steel barge but having seen it for a couple of days I’m not convinced it’s even afloat on the high tide anymore, in fact it’s probably time to call it a day on this one and either raise money to replace it or completely scrap it and move information and artefacts to a land based museum. It’s a hard choice to make especially to those invested in it and trying to maintain the legacy of those who came before and built and maintained it but this ‘ship’ is disintegrating from rot before everyone’s eyes and someone, and sods luck worst case scenario it’ll be a paying member of the public, is going to get badly hurt before much longer.
