点评:On a beautiful and unseasonally sunny winter day, we drove from Maldon to the Anderson Mill Open Day in Smeaton. The afternoon had already been lovely – throwing acorns into the creek and eating jam donuts with friends and their three little boys – when, on the drive home, we finally decided to stop at Tuki, a place we’ve passed many times on country rambles through that area.
What a wonderful surprise. We sat on the deck above the dam, taking in the views across to the Pyrenees Mountains, the Loddon Campaspe Region and Mount Tarrengower. I had a Ruby Spritz and he had a Red Duck Pale Ale, served by Jan, one of the owners, who made us feel immediately welcome.
We also met Robert, fresh from a day spent with shearers Darcy and Shannon shearing 800 sheep, and still full of cheerful energy from it all. In a gesture that perfectly captured the generosity of the place, he gave us a butt of wool offcuts for compost – very welcome for the clay and buckshot soil back home in Maldon.
Everything about the afternoon felt relaxed and genuine: good drinks, beautiful scenery, and warm, down-to-earth hospitality. We’ll definitely be back – next time with friends, for lunch, and perhaps a bit of fishing too. It’s a truly beautiful part of the world.
