点评:Trip to HMT May 19 to 22, 2024 Arriving Sunday - Departing Thursday.
Thought I would post some info about our first trip to HMT. Southern trails. We elected to stay in the middle of the system. Just us and a friend.
About getting there. We came in using I 77. If you are going to stay in the middle of the system and are going to areas like Wild Willy's or Ashland Resort or other places in the middle. Follow Wild Willy's directions not your GPS ! You will suffer much less! I 77 to Bluefield and then up to Northfork on US 52 then State Rt 17. Best way to do it, hands down.
You will be using Rt. 17 plenty to get between trailheads, no trailering, all riding.
We stayed at Wild Willy's. Wild Willy's worked out great. Trail permits sold here. Zollie the dude runnning the place was always around. Any issues any problems he was there. Very clean place. Nice little shop. They have a repair shop and it's really stocked! Handy. Got a neat lttle creek running along the resort. One trival thing, they have dehumifiers in the cottages and dang those things are handy with all the spring rains this time of the year!
Just east on Rt 17 is Ashland Resort. Maybe a 3 or 4 min SXS drive. They have a large store with just about everything you need. They also have gas. They have a car wash, we used it every day lol, since the dirt and clay really builds up thick for us. They have already built a large brand new bar and grill right next to the store. Is supposed to be open soon?
Now about our riding. First day we zoomed down to Pocahontas. Second day we zoomed up to Pinnacle. Third day we made a mad dash to Warrior! I am no trail judge expert, lol but here's how I see things.
Pochontas was closest so we managed to cover more trails there. Rt 17 to 13 to the trailhead. Made it to Bramwell at the southern bottom side of the trail system, neat little town. The green trails are basically easy, found the blue trails to be basically a green but narrower? Nothing to give you white knuckles. We took on one black trail #70. Going up one side was half way large loose rock, but doable, up toward the top it became steps and boulders. Kind of got stuck there, lucky a buddy was at the top, he guided us up. After that we decided we would rather stick to blue and green since there are plenty of them and they are more to our taste ! To all your own. 6.5 hours of riding and 60 miles for that day.
Since the Pinnacle trailhead entry is near Northfork we got gas at Luckys on US52. Not too far at all maybe 5 to 7 min. Ice too. The route to Pinnacle trails 27, 30 and 20 was neat, bunch of creeks, they have an old mine fan building on the route. And one wider creek with a nice rest area and even had trash cans. Thing about going up to Pinnacle trail 20 is it was a much bumpier ride, different kind of rock on the trail, makes your teeth chatter and your lower back ache if you push it lol. From the trail head to basically the south side of Pinnacle trail system it was approx 1 hour and 15 min with stops. We got near Pineville and made our way back eastward, covered bunch of greens and blues actually found the blues beat ya up less : ) . We used different trails to go back to Willy's, 36, 28 and the connecting roads to Indian. We were out of time and bypassed Indian trails using the side roads I think it was Rt 16 that takes you back to Rt 17. 8 hrs of riding and approx 75 miles that day.
Last day was to get to Warrior and eat a late lunch in Welch. Basically same thing, gas up at Luckys. Hit the Pinnacle trailhead 27. Then down the loonnggg connector trail 29. Liked this trail. Couple of very scenic stops on this route. Easy green, but due to rains, one 300 yard section was a swamp. Big ass ruts wow. Got through it fine but wasn't expecting it. Interesting thing on our way back on the same route the HMT Mainteance crew was on site with a backhole, doing work on that very section and they were doing good. I like seeing my $50 bucks hard at work ! Got to Welch. From the trailhead at Northfork to Welch approx 1 hr of 45 min. With several stops. Warrior was nice. We spent maybe 2 hrs there, couldn't cover much. But that's ok. Headed back to Welch, lunch at Subway. All good then made the trek home. 7hrs 18 min of driving. 82 miles. 30 min of that helping my buddy who handled the last U turn to the Welch highway too fast and ended up on his side, my winch got a work out. No injuries to him but his SXS lost a windshield and mirror, a lesson on doing fast u turns and donuts LOL
Nothing to report on Indian system. Funny that its at our door steps and we didn't touch it. Next time for sure!
Not a whole lot of people there on the trails. So many trails. We had perfect weather. No rain, high 80' low 60's
Sorry not much to report on dining other than lunch in Welch. We ate at our cabin every evening. So can't comment on where to eat in the area. If the bar and grill gets opened at Ashland it will be an excellent option. Wanted to do the Outlaw Bar and Grill, but they were open Thursday to Sunday and I think several other places had the same schedule or closed at 5: pm during our stay.
Last thing, we departed early, long 11 hr trip home. We used the same route back to I 77. FYI the Hardees in Bluefield is an excellent coffee filler upper for your departure, since you will need it! On your route out and good parking.
We will for sure be back, but probably check out the northern HMT trails, Rockhouse, Devils, etc.
Hope this helps some of you making a plan.
你会少受点苦!I 77 到 Bluefield,然后到 US 52 上的 Northfork,然后是 State Rt 17。
