点评:We surprised ourselves!
Lately, over the past one year comprising vacations to places as diverse as Kashmir, Purulia, Daringbari, Simla and so on, we had been consciously avoiding treks involving steep & long climbs - not trusting her stamina and my knee to be up to the task.
This time, we decided to take the plunge.
So, armed with trekking sticks hired from a local shop, we set off - very carefully with measured steps because, going downhill is where you need focus more than effort.
On the way down we met many people coming up. A fair share of those in the estimated age group 40-50 suggested we reconsider the trip, even expressed that my wife might find it almost impossible - but we held course and while she is a shaky trekker, she trusts my skills on such treks completely and refused to heed these negative vibes.
So, we reached the viewing level, took in the amazing surroundings, took photos aplenty before we decided to start the climb up.
The climb took us 47 minutes, including 4 halts & a bottle of refreshing Nimbooz. Helpful locals at the top had cautioned us against carrying or wearing warm clothes which would be a liability on the way up. Thanking them for sage advice and breathing steadily in & out through our nose & mouth respectively, we - age 66 & 65 - reached the top hardly out of breath!
This is not something any reasonably healthy senior citizen should miss - not just because the falls are, indeed, a lovely sight or because the environment is enchanting but also because, completing the trek would give an excellent boost to our self esteem & confidence about our fitness without much risk.
The internet suggests that this 900 odd meter trek actually takes us down by 900 feet. I'm not sure if the gradient was really that steep but if the numbers are correct, we have probably set a benchmark for us to improve upon every time we get opportunities to do so.
