Very Small with Powerful Statement about Basque Life
Basque Museum & Cultural Center的点评
点评：I came to this museum after visiting the ‘real’ Basque Country’ in Spain and found that the people working here had the same delightful energy as the people still residing in their Basque homeland.
Before you enter the museum, you see concrete benches etched with Lauburus, Eguzkilores, and nice quotes in English and Euskara. On the sidewalk are engraved Basque songs and common Basque surnames. The museum is part of a whole block with Basque significance, a sculpture of a Laiak (tool to turn over the soil), the Anduiza Hotel and Fronton, the Bar Gernika, a large Basque Mural, and the Basque Market restaurant.
It is a very small museum but it would be foolish to expect anything more from such a Basque community of only 20,000 folks.
There was a very chatty person behind the counter when I bought my ticket. We exchanged much information about the Basque Country, the local Basque choir, the Basque language classes, and various related events (like every five years they have the International Jaialdi Festival (next one 2025). It seems like all the staff is very enthusiastic about sharing their heritage and history.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t made aware of the next door boarding house I could’ve visited so I missed that part and cannot comment on it. Only the museum was open when I came through, the cultural center opens later. You get a 10% discount to eat at the Cultural Center when paying the entrance fee ($7/adult) to visit the museum.
The museum provides a small peek into the heritage of the Basque communities not only in Idaho, but in the American West. It interprets the rich and colorful history of the Basques, their origins, and their new life in America. One of the displays changes every six months according to the person who sold me my ticket. When I visited, it showed the history of Ernest Hemingway (Hemingway & Euskal Herria) and its connection to the Baque Country (where he loved to bike, fish, write). Hemingway spent the last year of his life in Sun Valley, Idaho, where he developed a close bond with the Basque people of the area.
Since I had visited that area of Spain, not much surprised me at the museum. I already knew about their pelota, dance, costumes, etc. However, I learned about the special sheepherders tree carvings (called arborglyphs – mostly done in aspen trees) and their significance. I also learned of the BIS (Basque Intelligence Service), an organization working for the FBI in Cuba, around the 1940’s. And, that there were 69 Basque sheep branding symbols in the area between 1908 and 1968.
There is also a small store where you can purchase Basque related items.
Parking nearby can be an issue. The parking meters near the museum are only good for one hour and spaces are small and limited. One hour may not be enough time for a full museum visit.
As I left the museum, I remembered that I had seen Lauburus (traditional symbol of the Basque country) on many old buildings in the Yucatan, MX. The Basque sailed to many places in the old days. Glad I could make these connections during my travels.
