点评:We arrived mid-morning at the Flint Creek Day Use Area in Decatur, on a slough off the Tennessee River. It has a parking lot right off Point Mallard Parkway, and there is a fishing dock there but no restrooms. We walked the Flint Creek Trail which starts with a bridge and loops through the forest, about 1.25 miles. There were tons of birds in the trees, especially in the parts of the trail near the water. My husband spotted a couple of deer as we got back to the bridge.
The Wheeler Refuge visitor center is very close to the Flint Creek area on the other side of the road but is currently closed for renovations (as of Oct 2022).
After lunch we drove to the Beaverdam Creek Swamp Trail in Madison, which has a small parking area next to I-565 but no restrooms. This trail was a boardwalk out-and-back through a stand of beautiful tupelo trees. The swamp was mostly dried up except for a pool at the end of the boardwalk where we saw some fish swimming. We saw some chicken-of-the-woods orange fungus along the way.
The refuge encompasses a lot of land around the Tennessee River/Wheeler Lake but we did not visit anything other than these two nature trails on this trip.
