The East Broad Top is the only remaining narrow gauge railroad east of the Rocky Mountains. Run as a non-profit by a volunteer organization since 2020, it sports six 2-6-2 Mikado steam engines (only one currently operating), and about 30 miles of track and right of way between Rockhill and East Broad Top mountain.
Originally built in 1871 to supply iron ore from East Broad Top mountain to the foundry in Rockhill, the railroad maintains a fully operational 1903 machine shop run by two huge boilers powering a fixed steam engine that drives all the machinery through a vast set of overhead leather fan-belts. It was state of the art technology in 1903.
Today only 4.5 miles of track are operational providing a pleasant one-hour out and back ride on the train. But the non-profit has big plans to reopen the entire line to East Broad Top mountain.
I just loved visiting the machine shops and the round house. There is a serious 2-3 hour tour of the machine works that is offered from time to time; check out their website. I just took the normal one hour tour of the round house and machine shop because we just had half a day to spend. But I'd go back to hang out and talk with the machinists rebuilding the engine.
The little town is tiny; 300 people, but picturesque with nice bread and breakfasts (including one in the original home of the railroad superintendent.) So if you want to treat yourself to a real romantic mini-trip, take your partner down for an overnight or two.
