Interesting house but generally disappointing experience

点评：Visited for the first time today. The formal garden was smaller than expected and was a bit unkempt in places. The house is by guided tour only and was interesting as far as I could tell. Unfortunately our guide did not project her voice very well, and unless she was facing my direction I found her hard to hear, she would also start talking as she entered a room rather than waiting for everyone to catch up. In the first room the noise from other staff talking drowned out the guide. I was told there were seats in every room but there was only one, so no guarantee you get to sit down if you need to and the tour takes an hour.
I don’t think the house visit would be suitable for children, and although there is an adventure playground for them, it’s a shame they would miss out on the history as there’s nothing to engage them.
We had lunch in the cafe and it was quite poor. The egg mayonnaise sandwich was on plain white bread and was more mayo than egg. Sandwiches have to be ordered so you don’t see what you’re going to get. The scones tasted like they were a couple of days old. The pork and apricot sausage roll tasted like it had apricot jam in it.
The whole place had an air of having seen better days, which is a great shame for a once great house. I think it needs more imagination brought to the experience, the managers should look at the way the National Trust do it.
