点评:Visited here last Fri (having read a great review in Bradt's 'Slow Dorset' - 2012). Therefore, I was expecting the museum to be good; boy, how wrong... it was superb!
As an avid museum goer this gem of a place is up there in my favourites list. Housed in a lovely (ex-barn?) building, with attractive separate garden, the wonderful collection covers several millennia: from palaeontology, palaeolithic, bronze and iron ages, Roman right up to the 20th century.
Of particular note (and fun) is the brilliant detailed town model of the famous fire of 1731 and, for train nerds, an exact reproduction model railway of the old train station and environs.
I simply loved visiting this museum (spent four hours as so much to see). What made my visit especially rewarding is down to the excellent volunteers who were welcoming, friendly, knowledgeable and passionate.
With a nice gift shop, this museum will not disappoint. You'll definitely be guaranteed to leave with a new piece of knowledge, and whether you're a kid or retired you'll want to return again.
