点评:Holmes county has the second largest population of Amish residents in the United States, with an estimated 42% of its residents being of the Anabaptist faith. Thus, it should come as no surprise that the Holmes County Trail was designed to accommodate not only cyclists and walkers, but also horse-powered buggies.
Sharing the trail with horses and buggies can seem a bit of a novelty to those of us who are recreational cyclists, but in our rides on this trail, we’ve seen how useful it is for local residents, especially the Amish and Mennonites as a means to get from place to place without having to go on a public road.
A bike rider soon becomes accustomed to the “clip clop” of an approaching buggy, as well as the sensation for being passed by an older person dressed in customary Mennonite garb whizzing by on an e-bike.
These are probably the first things people will notice when riding the trail.
We’ve done the whole trail, segment by segment, and if I recall correctly, parts of it were fairly bumpy around Fredericksburg and Holmesville. This isn’t much of an issue because it’s wide to accommodate buggies, so you can easily steer around the bumpy bits.
Located in a scenic area of Ohio, the trail runs from Fredericksburg to Holmesville to Millersburg to Killbuck, with another separate portion that goes from Glenmont to Brinkhaven. Why there is no link from Killbuck to Glenmont, I can’t tell you. There is a marked route via road from Glenmont to Killbuck should you care to give it a try.
We most recently rode from Millersburg to Killbuck and from Glenmont to Brinkhaven.
Millersburg is a bustling town with many options for food and drink, including the local brewery. Killbuck is much smaller, though it does have a pizza place that looked nice from the outside (we didn’t eat there on this occasion, having brought our own lunch). Glenmont is a tiny village, and appears to be somewhat economically disadvantaged. There is a Glenmont Tavern, but it didn’t look open when we were there (on a Friday evening about 6 pm). According to their map, there’s also a hostel. We didn’t ride into Brinkhaven so I can’t comment on the amenities available there.
There were clean port a potties at Millersburg, Glenmont, and Brinkhaven and shelters with picnic tables as well. At Killbuck, there was a picnic table.
The two segments of the trail I’ve mentioned as traveling most recently are lovely, and we enjoyed both rides. Just be aware that from Glenmont to Brinkhaven and vice versa, it’s a long, gradual uphill to the midpoint of the trail where it intersects county road 75 (Baddow Pass). But you’re then rewarded with a nice long, freewheeling descent.
Arriving at Brinkhaven, riders will see the “Bridge of Dreams,” the third longest covered bridge in the country where the Holmes Country Trail meets the Mohican Valley Trail, which then joins the Kokosing Gap Trail.
Also, the Glenmont-Brinkhaven segment of the trail seems much less traveled. It’s a peaceful ride, paralleling and crossing what appear to be off-road trails and small roads, a bit like cycling through the woods amongst the deer, birds, and squirrels.
If you can make the opportunity, this is a trail worth exploring.
