点评:We visited Garth’s studio towards the end of our NZ trip, just before returning to Scotland. We had built up an interest and a bit of knowledge of pounamu on our travels but hadn’t found anything that felt right for us.
Sadly, Garth wasn’t there when we visited, but Jo gave us a fantastic insight into the significance of pounamu in Māori culture, and explained how Garth finds the stone, then creates his pieces in the workshop. There was no hard sell at all and we could sense a real integrity in the work. We ended up buying two beautiful porohita (discs) which we each felt a strong connection with. We left feeling incredibly positive about our experience, and delighted that we had finally found two pieces that felt right for us. We knew that the stone was of New Zealand origin (not imported, as so much is in NZ), and that there was an authenticity in the way it was collected and carved. This was importantly to us.
As a bonus, Jo gave us some great tips and insights into what else we should see in the region in the final days of our trip
All in all, it was a wonderful stop off and a great way to round off our trip.
