点评:My wife and me visited the Birling Gap on a Sunday in June whilst in the area.
The Birling Gap is owned by National Trust, there is a large (pay & display) car park here which gets busy at popular times. The car park is free for National Trust members. I believe that there is also a public bus service which serves the area.
The Birling Gap has a fairly large café facility, a gift shop, information centre and public toilets. Four cottages remain from an original terrace of eight built for the coastguard in 1878 and periodically another one is lost as the coast line is eroded by the sea. A small shingly beach may be reached from a set of stairs leading from the car park and if you are visiting the beach is it is advisable to stay clear of the chalk cliffs in case of chalk falls.
The information centre is well worth visiting, it shows how much the area has changed over many years, particularly with respect to the cumulative coastal erosion clearly visible in old photographs and maps. On the day of our visit, there was a member of National Trust staff on duty here who was very knowledgeable about the area.
Certainly, glad that I have visited this area, the scenery is striking and photogenic, the cottages act as a reminder of coastal erosion through the years and the transitory nature of the natural earth.
