点评：What a trip for aged grandparents and their twelve year old granddaughter! We took her for a day trip to Waihi to visit the lavender farm, and allowed the time to stop at the Waikino station and take the Gioldfields train return journey to Waihi. It's about 30.minutes each way. Turnaround time on our particular journey was 15 minutes, so the trip was an hour and a quarter in total.
It was perfect. We sat in the open wagon in the cool summer breeze. The track was used in the old days by the goldmine train. It hauled ore from the Waihi golf mine to the Waikino stamper battery, where it was crushed and the gold was extracted. Nowadays the Department of Conservation maintains the station and track, which is used by the Goldfields Railway group. They run the service with love and enthusiasm, maintaining our heritage. We get to enjoy the experience.
The conductor revels in his work. His enthusiasm is contagious, his humour delightful, and it is marvellous to witness the way he interacts with his passengers. He introduced the youngsters to the engine driver at the end of the journey. He and the driver allowed them to go into the engine, and explained how it works.
The train itself is quaint, slow, old, small and utterly charming. The locomotive is an old diesel shunting engine, perfect for the job. The Waikino station was the old Paeroa station, moved to Waikino for a new life as a heritage station. When you enter it, it feels like you are stepping back a century in time.
Well done, Goldfields Railway and well done D.O.C. As we took our leave of the conductor, granddaughter's eyes were shining. Smiling and bubbling with delight, we returned to the car to carry on to the lavender farm.
Go there. Even if you don't have a grandchild to take. No matter how old you are, the experience will reawaken the child in you.
