点评:I went to offer a prayer for my Indian friend who is sick. As a tourist one can't help but feel as though you are a soft target as they firstly overcharge you for the Prasad offering and secondly, even though you have done your research, the Prasad sellers almost make you feel as though you need a guide for the experience. All I wanted was to give a prayer for my friend but felt intimidated by their presence.
Be very careful after you walk away from the temple with your remaining Prasad. There are touts on the main market road insisting that the remaining flowers need to be thrown into the lake at Brahma gaht only. This is totally untrue I have now figured out. I was led to the temple by the tout and even though I said I would do the process by myself for my friends health and wellbeing in my own prayer, I was told that I needed to first read the overhead sign and was led to a 'priest' who insisted on doing a prayer for my friend first. The more I said no, the more force came from his side to complete the prayer. After a while, the focus of his prayer became all about money and the importance of karma and giving a donation and the amount was in the thousands. I started to get very upset and started crying as this individual was taking away my true reason for being there. I went to the water's edge and did my own releasing of flowers and did my own prayer for my friend on my own time. Upon finishing, as I was walking up the stairs to the main landing area, the tout was once again forcing me to give money. I got very angry with him by this point and walked away and he had the audacity to argue that I must use this opportunity and give a donation. This is untrue.
My advice to all tourists, especially first time solo tourists to Pushkar, NEVER NEVER accept flowers from anyone on the gahts or on the main road. Do not assume that any person that approaches you to do Puja is an actual Brahmin. The 'Pushkar Passport' is a big scam for the vulnerable tourists to Pushkar. And it angers me so. You should never be forced to make a donation especially when you have the best on intentions.
