点评:Huntley Meadows Park is a wetlands park located in Fairfax County Virginia. Once you enter the park it is quick to forget you are in an area surrounded by urban development. Most importantly, it is a haven for a broad variety of birds, insects, butterflies, and dragon flies as well as beautiful marsh plants. The Crimson-eyed Rose Mallows (Hibiscus) plants are white with a red center are a beautiful sight when they are in peak bloom during July and August. A gentleman I was talking to told me this plant was one of George Washington’s favorites. There are two entrances to the park, one off Kings Highway and the other off Lockheed Boulevard. The Lockheed Boulevard trail has an unpaved trail that takes you pass the Visitors Center and eventually to the boardwalk. We had to take the long way around to the boardwalk as the park service had closed off the direct trail for tree work. The Kings Highway trail is paved and flat. The park has handicap accessible trails, boardwalk, and viewing platforms. No dogs or pets are allowed on the trails. We were here in the morning and saw several birdwatchers and photographers enjoying the serenity and beauty of the park while observing the wildlife. In time, they were joined not only by trail walkers like us but also families, and school bus loads of children from various summer camps, etc. Another appreciated feature were the many benches strategically placed along the trails for those who chose to use them. This place is well worth a visit and return visit.
