点评:Marquette's downtown has improved in recent years with a few decent shops or galleries and a few average to better than average restaurants. There aren't many empty storefronts. Still, downtown pales in comparison to Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Charlevoix, Traverse City or Saugatuck -- if those are your comparisons.
Remarkably, everything closes early. Even on a Friday evening in the summer on a holiday weekend. Why would the downtown shops not stay open to at least 7 pm?
Anyways, there's a lot of life Saturday mornings in the summer when a better than average market is held in a commons area. You could easily make a morning of it before heading to the beach or on an afternoon hike or bike ride.
Be warned that virtually everywhere downtown is paid parking. It's no wonder so many shops have relocated to the strips outside of town, where customers don't have to pay for parking.
Donckers or Babycakes are probably the best for breakfast/coffee. Northland Pub inside the Landmark Inn has a full bar if you fancy a stiff drink. Getz's is a great locally owned clothing store with a big emphasis on outdoor clothing. I Love Marquette and Michigan Fair are the best touristy gift shops for stickers, hats, t-shirts, etc. Missing from downtown is a good wine bar.
Unfortunately, the waterfront along the harbor at the bottom of downtown isn't entirely walkable as new and old developments prevent a footpath from running uninterrupted along the quay.
A short walk from downtown up a hill on Third Street are three or four coffee shops, a brewery or two, and a little livelier feel.
A little further up Washington Street (the main street) is a homeless shelter, directly across from one of the main hotels. I didn't get harassed but there are a dozen or so homeless loitering around 24/7.
All things considered, you could spend a good day downtown, excluding any evening dinners or drinks.
