点评:A beautiful, unique, and mostly free location where you can easily spend several hours taking in the sights and participating in a wide range of fun and enriching activities. Perfect for a day trip with something for everyone to enjoy, especially if you are a visitor to the city seeking local experiences. Belle Isle offers a brief escape from the bustle and noise elsewhere in Detroit as well as rich natural, educational, and cultural experiences and resources. While visiting my friend, a Detroit native, over the summer, we spent a whole afternoon experiencing the sprawling state park and only visited about half of the amenities typically open to the public. Unfortunately, Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory was closed for renovations at the time. We did not get the opportunity to visit Belle Isle Nature Center or Dossin Great Lakes Museum either, though I believe both were open to the public that day and we simply ran out of time. We had an amazing experience visiting Belle Isle Aquarium and strolling through the outside Oudolf Garden. As I would later learn, Belle Isle Aquarium is considered "America's oldest original aquarium" since it opened its doors more than 120 years ago. The architecture was breathtaking, with the aquarium housed in an ornate, well-preserved historical building unlike any museum I had ever seen. There was an impressive variety of aquatic creatures available to see there, and plenty of friendly and helpful volunteers eager to provide in-depth education about all of them. The gardens were equally incredible to take in, covering a large surface area that is easily accessible to everyone. Finally, we took a leisurely walk down the wooden walkway, looking in awe at the nature and equally beautiful human-made landmarks all around us. While we could not enter the conservatory that day, we still admired the beauty of the greenhouse and the surrounding areas visible from the outside. Another remarkable landmark I remember from that day is the Nancy Brown Peace Carillon (the bell tower outside the aquarium). Finally, we ended our visit relaxing on a perfectly placed park bench overlooking the Detroit River. Overall, I was extremely pleased with our experience and am eager to go back and visit the renowned locations we did not get to that day. Conveniently, public transportation is easy to use getting to and from Belle Isle State Park, with the bus pulling right up to the curb outside to load passengers, and visiting the park was free for pedestrians as well. I know there is a fee for driving or parking at Belle Isle State Park, so I would recommend going on foot/on the bus if possible. Looking back on my visit now, the only drawbacks were the limited hours the park is open and the discomfort from squeezing a sizeable crowd into confined spaces where everyone is moving in different directions. I don't know if crowds are always a noticeable issue, or if it was just an inevitability of visiting the park on a Saturday afternoon in the summer. I look forward to going back and anticipate an equally positive (if not even better) experience at the conservatory, museum, and nature center I have not yet gotten to see firsthand. I am excited to see the renovations of the buildings as well as the ongoing expansion of the gardens outside we witnessed during our visit. From what I experienced so far, I would gladly recommend Belle Isle State Park to anyone spending a nice day in Detroit.
