The night walk at Popham's Arboretum was easily one of the highlights of our family trip to Dambulla.
We booked the night walk and were fortunate enough to have guides who were genuinely enthusiastic about giving us the best possible experience. They didn't simply take us around a predetermined route and point things out; they actively tried to find wildlife for us and clearly wanted the boys to have a memorable experience.
We saw several interesting animals and birds, including deer, a kangaroo lizard and a blue flycatcher, and the guides worked very hard to find us a grey loris. Eventually they succeeded! We did not see its eyes, though.
The guides were exceptionally friendly with our children. At one point, one of them even took our son Sasha on a bicycle ride up to the gate. That ended up being his personal highlight of the entire experience.
The walk was quite tiring for the boys, but they were so engaged and excited that they somehow still had plenty of energy afterwards. What impressed us most was the enthusiasm of the guides. They clearly cared about the experience rather than simply completing a tour.
If you're visiting Dambulla and have the opportunity to do the night walk, I highly recommend it — especially with children. It was a very memorable experience for our family.
